Outervention's summer programs uniquely combine wilderness activities, parent workshops, mentoring/ peer education and follow-up programs to build and strengthen the relationships between adolescent girls and their parents. The weekly courses will cover topics such as effective communication, conflict resolution, setting limits and boundaries, adolescent development, sexuality and more. Parents and their daughters will combine these courses with an outdoor activity each month to help them work on the lessons learned during the week in a fun and supportive environment.
Course
Structure
Sessions will meet once a week for three hours and every 4th Saturday for
an all day outdoor adventure activity. Weekly meetings will be structured
so that the daughters and their parents will have time to meet and discuss
the issues both as a unit and with their own peer group. A meal will be included
in the weekly session. The outdoor program is tailored to complement the lessons
learned and issues explored in the previous weeks. Debriefing by staff members
will be an integral piece of the day.
